Looking back through human history, conflict between peoples has never ceased. In the latter half of the 19th century, one individual came to believe that the root cause lay in differences of language and ethnicity — and set out to create a neutral international common language.
人類の歴史を振り返ると、民族間の対立は絶えず続いてきました。19世紀後半、ある一人の人物がその原因を言語や民族の違いにあると考え、中立的な国際共通語を創る試みをしました。
That language was Esperanto, named for “one who hopes.” While Esperanto never took root as a global lingua franca, its spirit — promoting cross-cultural mutual understanding and connecting people across linguistic barriers — left a profound mark on the way we think about international communication today.
その言語こそが「エスペラント語」、「希望する人」を意味する名の言語です。エスペラントは「世界共通語」として定着することはありませんでしたが、異文化相互理解を促し、言葉の壁を越えて人々をつなぐ——その精神は、現代の国際コミュニケーションのあり方に大きな影響を与えました。
As time passed, English became the de facto global language. As a result, English is no longer simply a national tongue — it has evolved into an international language, taking on diverse forms in different parts of the world.
時代が進む中で、「英語」は事実上の世界共通語となりました。その結果、英語はかつての民族語ではなく、国際語として各地で多様な変容を遂げています。
We Languages was founded in Japan in 1996 as an English language school, and went on to advocate for a new vision of English for the 21st century: World Englishes. This concept holds that multiple “englishes” can and should coexist within one “World” — a form of English used in a measured, balanced way that respects the culture and individuality of each country. The name “We” is rooted in this idea.
We Languagesは1996年、日本で英語学校として設立され、21世紀に向けた新しい英語の在り方として「World englishes」を提唱しました。これは、一つの”World”に複数の”englishes”が共存し合う考え方であり、各国の文化・個性を尊重しながら、中庸的に使う英語の形です。Weの名は、ここに由来しています。
Through English as a global language, people can achieve broader mutual understanding — and in doing so, learn to celebrate their differences. We was born in Japan, a country whose name itself means “Great Harmony” (Yamato / 大和). Our mission is to bring harmony to the world through language.
「グローバル言語」としての英語により広く人々は理解し合い、その結果、互いの違いを楽しむことができます。「大いなる調和（Big Harmony）」を意味する「大和」の国で生まれたWeは、言葉を通じて世界に調和を生み出すことを使命としています。
“Expanding the Global Language, Enhancing Local Languages.” 「グローバル言語の拡大とローカル言語の強化。」This is the We mission.

The Growth and Evolution of We
Weの成長と進化
We launched its language education business in Shibuya, Tokyo — establishing a place for learning that connects language and culture.
Weは東京・渋谷で語学教育事業を開始し、言語と文化をつなぐ学びの場づくりをスタートしました。
We developed an early Learning Management System (LMS) to streamline enrollment management and make learning progress visible — laying the foundation for greater operational efficiency and quality.
初期のLMS（Learning Management System）を開発し、受講管理と学習進行の可視化を推進しました。学習運用の効率化と品質向上に向けた基盤づくりが始まりました。
The LMS was developed into a full platform and launched as “Welife.” Lesson booking and progress management moved online, establishing a system to support continuous, sustainable learning.
LMSをプラットフォーム化し、「Welife」として展開。レッスン予約や進行管理をオンライン化し、継続的な学習運用を支える仕組みを整えました。
Integration with web conferencing systems enabled the full-scale launch of English and Japanese online courses. We expanded its service reach and advanced the borderless democratization of learning opportunities.
Web会議システムとの統合により、英語・日本語のオンラインコースを本格展開。サービス提供エリアを広げ、学習機会のボーダレス化を進めました。
Publisher Hiragana Times joined the We Group as a content partner, strengthening both educational resources and the capacity to share knowledge globally.
出版社『ひらがなタイムズ』がコンテンツパートナーとしてWeグループに加わり、教材資源と情報発信力を強化しました。
To raise instructional quality and consistency, We established a dedicated professional training body: the Japan Association of Super Japanese Language Instructors. This built a more robust training system in support of high-quality Japanese language education.
指導品質と教育の一貫性を高めるため、専門的な講師育成機関『一般社団法人スーパー日本語講師会』を設立。より高品質な日本語教育を支える研修体制を整備しました。
In response to sweeping changes in the global environment, We moved its language services entirely online and significantly expanded the range of languages offered — building a new foundation for global language education.
世界的な環境変化に対応し、語学サービスを全面的にオンライン化。提供言語を大きく拡充し、グローバル語学教育の新たな基盤を構築しました。

When we learn a new language, we gain new perspectives, discover new sensibilities, and gradually become someone new. It is not the acquisition of knowledge — it is the evolution of the self.
新しい言語を学ぶとき、人は新しい視点を手に入れ、新しい感覚を身につけ、そして少しずつ、新しい自分になっていきます。それは知識の習得ではなく、自分自身の進化です。
In an age when AI can generate language on demand, we believe all the more in what it means for a person to speak in their own words. In those words live not only the information we want to share, but also the time we have lived, the culture we carry, and the feelings that have not yet found their shape. To exchange words is to touch each other’s stories — and that is where people truly meet.
AIが言葉を自在に生成する時代だからこそ、私たちは、人が自分の言葉で語ることの意味を信じています。そこには、伝えたい情報だけでなく、その人が生きてきた時間や文化、まだ言葉になっていない思いまでが宿ります。言葉を交わすとは、互いのストーリーに触れ合うこと。そこにこそ、人と人が本当に出会う瞬間があります。
